Surfing Workouts on the Beach

Surfing Workouts are Best on the Beach

Yo Surfing Athletes!

Thanks for Dropping In to Surf Training Secrets

So you want better surfing workouts to help you catch more waves & have a better surfing body right? Well forget spending most of your time surf training in the gym. The best results come when you spend most of your surfing workout energy in the medium that you compete or perform. In our case that means in the ocean.

Surfing Workout Secrets for Beach Training

In the above paragraph I mentioned competition – even if your not a competitive athlete you are competing for waves and with the ocean every time you paddle out. You know it. That is just the way it is these days. So with that in mind spice up your surfing workouts with real beach training at least once per week if there is no swell rolling around.

Here is the secret – simulate how you surf and what happens in the ocean. Typically that means a fast efficient paddle out followed by a series of short sharp bursts to duck dive or paddle into waves. The actual surfing is usually very dynamic & short (unless at a long point break) followed by paddling back often through the inside. Make your surfing fitness training as sport specific as possible.

So when you get onto the beach there is no real reason to go for long runs – as surfers we don’t really benefit from this. We do from short sharp surfers sprints though. And to make your surfing workout even more effective – get into the ocean. Learn to body surf, practice paddling or swimming out fast and doing short sharp surfers sprints on the way back in.

Surfers pretty much have to be fast, flexible and efficient so lift your body weight. Watch some of the surf training videos on this site and do em on the sand. Press ups and Surfers Pop Up’s are great to do on the beach.

Incorporate some balance type activity into your exercise for surfing fitness regime. As surfers we know balance plays a crucial role in our sport. Some Yoga poses or single leg balance stretches can help a lot with surfing flexibility and over all surfing performance.

When your in the water one of the best things to add into your surfing workout is improving your lung capacity by holding your breath. I like to do underwater swims as this is generally the state we are in when we have to hold our breath (ie. all ready fatigued!)
